About Doug Engel
At a young age, I found myself intrigued by the natural beauty of stones. From the unique colors, to the unique patterns and varieties, I would find myself scooping up stones from the roadsides, fields, and riverbanks. Those stones I collected so many years ago are still with me today, and from them, I developed an appreciation for gemstones.
This admiration for gemstones led me to buy them from various shops and TV shopping channels. Through trial and error, I learned the difference between the gems, and I was also exposed to the sometimes unscrupulous jewellery trade. I had my share of successes and failures, and it was this journey that inspired me to start my own business to help customers find the best quality at the best price.
I started my business by advertising and selling my own collection of gemstones. Eventually, I got a call from a gentleman interested in my gems, and through our conversations, I learned that he was a master cutter who had won several awards. He asked if I had ever thought about selling jewellery, and this was the moment I realized I could combine my love for gemstones with my knowledge of the jewellery industry.
I went on to work at a large jewellery store but quickly realized that the store had a history of unethical practices. So I moved on to a higher-end jewellery store at WEM and quickly rose to the #1 salesperson. This experience inspired me to start my own business, and since 1999 I have been helping people get the best quality for their budget.

I have learned the trade by the old school methods – before the world learn how to cut corners when the only way you could do something is by doing it the best way.
Unfortunately, it has become commonplace to sell the “paper” instead of the gemstone. What that entails are reports claiming to be excellent but in actuality don’t measure up. E.G. : Round Brilliant 1ct diamonds ; the excellent diameter range should measure between 6.45mm to 6.5mm , now a–days it is common to find 1ct diamonds that are 6.25 to 6.30mm which is the size of a properly proportioned .95ct stone , you can’t just change the rules and think it will have the same fire and brilliance.
The majority of jewellery out there is what you would call commercial grade; This is jewellery or gemstones and diamonds that are sold by price–point alone, not for the quality. The most important thing when it comes to selecting a diamond or gemstone even the gold in a ring is to know the differences in quality; what makes one stone superior to another why you have seen some stones that just blind you with their sparkle and others are dull.
That’s not the way I roll…. It should be a win-win situation, I like to sleep at night, and I want to do the best for my customers. I truly believe in old-school values and integrity in business. I have been in business since 1999 and to my knowledge have Zero unhappy customers, it’s a track record I am proud of.
